This Is Not Home

A Silent Encounter

‘This Is Not Home’ is a chance encounter between two artists who live and work on either side of the Channel. Rather than explicitly stating a common ground of investigation, Edward Sanders and Aurélien Maillard instinctively chose to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers by offering a small collection of objects whose juxtaposition induces the visitor to search, by reflex, for links of uses and meanings. A coffee table, a kind of window open onto a bucolic representation, floral decorative patterns and sorts of paintings as well whose sizes recall those of traditional interiors. Obviously, the display summons a domestic universe, but after second thoughts this suggestion wobbles. A discreet strangeness rises. It is suggested particularly by the fact that the objects are not really miscible in a homogeneous whole, for instance, colors don’t really match together. 

They prevent a smooth contemplative sight and allow a gentle tearing away from this condition of servile objects to pop up without dogma to a new availability. Thus objects exist for themselves, separately. They offer themselves to anyone who wants to see them in all their specificity and literalness.

Une Rencontre Sans Parole

‘This Is Not Home’ est une rencontre fortuite entre deux artistes vivant et travaillant de chaque côté de la manche. Plutôt que de chercher à nommer explicitement un terrain commun d’investigation, Edward Sanders et Aurélien Maillard ont choisi instinctivement de dépasser les barrières culturelles et linguistique en proposant une petite collection d’objets dont la juxtaposition induit le spectateur à chercher, par réflexe, des liens d’usages ou de significations. Une table basse, une sorte de fenêtre ouverte sur une représentation bucolique, des motifs décoratifs floraux, ainsi que des tableaux dont le format rappelle ceux des intérieurs traditionnels. De toute évidence, le dispositif convoque l’univers

domestique. Dans un second temps cette suggestion vacille. La discrète étrangeté de la scénographie surgit, suggérée notamment par le fait que les objets ne sont pas réellement miscibles dans un tout homogène. Les couleurs jurent. Elles empêchent une lecture lisse et harmonieuse d’un ensemble supposé. Le dispositif permet alors un arrachement en douceur à cette condition d’objets serviles pour se hisser sans dogme vers une disponibilité nouvelle. Les objets existent désormais pour eux-même, séparément. Ils s’offrent à qui veut bien le voir dans toute leur spécificité et leur littéralité.

Aurélien Maillard lives and works in Boulogne-sur-Mer and Lille. Graduate from the ERBA (now EESAB) in Rennes and from the Art Department of Rennes 2 University, he has developed a sculpture practice. He opposes the minimal art formal vocabulary to handcraft gestures. It conveys to his work an ambivalent status, in-between the perfect finishes of industrial products and sensitive objects with a spiritual dimension.
